Episode 4: Dan Sickles Did Nothing Wrong!
In the first of their History Hot Takes, Mike and Don discuss the decision on the second day of the Battle of Gettysburg by Union III Corps Commander Dan Sickles to advance his troops out to the Peach Orchard and Emmitsburg Road and away from supporting troops. It was a decision for which he has been attacked for the past 162 years. Let’s see what the boys think of his decision. In another example of the show’s stunning professionalism, a book was mentioned in passing with the promise that it would be discussed later in the show. It comes as a shock to nobody that Mike and Don promptly forgot to talk about it. The book is titled “Gettysburg’s Peach Orchard: Longstreet, Sickles, and the Bloody Fight for the “Commanding Ground” Along the Emmitsburg Road” by James A. Hessler and Britt C. Isenberg, both men licensed battlefield guides at Gettysburg National Military Park.
